Beyond Navigation as Metaphor

چکیده

The popular view of navigation is that it is a conscious, goal directed activity i n which someone is trying to reach a destination. Such a view of navigation i s essentially individualistic, objectivist and cognitive. Just as Lynch's aim i n trying to specify the basic, discrete units of (urban) space have had a significant impact on urban planning and design, so the metaphorical use of the concept of navigation in information space may lead to effective and important design decisions. However, whether this view of navigation can act as the basis of an understanding of what people do in such spaces is another matter. The crucial thing missing form the traditional geographies and traditional views of navigation is the failure to appreciate how environments are conceived by people as opposed to simply perceived by people. An environment is not simply some physical structure to which humans must adapt. People play a role in producing the space, through their activities and practice. A semiotic analysis of space recognises that there are many different views of space and that space is a subjectively defined concept. There is a context to space which needs to be communicated, negotiated and understood between people. More than just space, there is the idea of place. People produce or construct their places at different times and there is a knock on effect from one place to another. In this chapter some implications of taking this different view of information space are explored. The popular view of navigation is that it is a conscious, goal directed activity in which someone is trying to reach a destination. The Dual Meaning Potential of Prepositional Grammatical Metaphor in Prose Fiction

From a Systemic Functional perspective, Grammatical Metaphor (GM) as is taken to be a chief driving force in the discourse of different genres, an important adult language machinery for ideational meanings to be semantically cross-mapped and realized through a different form in the stratum of the lexico-grammar, in order to convey changed meanings and tinker with the discursive flow and develop...

CONSTRUCTING AUTOPOIESIS: THE ARCHITECTURAL BODY IN LIGHT OF CONTEMPORARY COGNITIVE SCIENCE “Constructing life”/constructing metaphors

When crossing disciplinary domains, one always crashes head-first into the problem of metaphor: how can you connect ideas from distinct intellectual fields by means of a device analogous to what mathematicians recognize as an equal sign or a congruency sign? The problem intensifies when both domains have to buy into the term employed. Since theorizers about metaphor now understand that a metaph...

Navigation and Learning A Cognitive Analysis of User Tasks in Electronic Information Spaces

While the navigation metaphor has received widespread support from the HCI community, the views on the usefulness of the navigation approach have a very wide range. Benyon (1998, p 35) argues that “‘Navigation in Information Space’ is not (just) a metaphor, (...) [it] is a new paradigm for thinking about HCI.” On the other hand, Dillon and Vaughan (1997) claim that “navigation is a limited meta...

A city metaphor for supporting navigation in complex information spaces

A major problem in modern information systems is to locate information and to re-find information one has seen before. Systems like the Word-Wide Web are heavily interlinked but do not show structures that help users to navigate the information it contains. The use of appropriate navigation metaphors can help to make the structure of modern information systems easier to understand and therefore...

Beyond ‘Funnel’ and ‘Fireworks’: ‘Water Ribbed Balloon’ as a New Metaphorical Approach to Innovation-in-Practice

Product innovation success has very much to do with the development of models ormetaphors that are able to guide actors. One can observe two traditions in thisregard: rational and non-rational models. Apparently in the former the model, suchas “development funnel”, is regarded as a mechanism and rigid applicable, picturinginnovation as an orderly, goal-oriented, value-neutral, and systematic pr...

Navigating Desktop GeoVirtual Environments

Desktop GeoVirtual Environments, particularly ones intended to facilitate geographic visualization, require the design of special interface methods for navigation and orientation. These methods, ideally, should support movement through the environment with little cognitive effort. For desktop (and immersive) GeoVEs developed thus far, interface methods have been borrowed from other virtual envi...
